Fraser Valley Treaty Advisory Committee

The purpose of the Fraser Valley Treaty Advisory Committee (FVTAC) is to ensure that the interests of local government within the geographic boundaries of the Fraser Valley Regional District and/or its sphere of socio-economic influence are identified and considered by the Province of British Columbia in the tripartite treaty negotiation process which is currently underway. The parties to treaty negotiations in British Columbia are the Government of Canada, the Province of British Columbia and the respective First Nation.  Local Government interests at the treaty table are represented by BC's treaty negotiators.

The FVTAC was created in 1995 further to a Protocol Agreement between the Province of British Columbia and the Union of BC Municipalities. In accordance with that agreement, the FVTAC sits as an advisor to the provincial government at all treaty tables within its geographic boundaries. The FVTAC currently participates in treaty negotiations at the Yale Nation, In-SHUCK-ch Nation, and Sto:lo Nation treaty tables.

The Fraser Valley Treaty Advisory Committee is a committee of elected officials, staff and observers, who represent all jurisdictions within the Fraser Valley Regional District. The FVTAC represents the municipalities of the City of Abbotsford, the City of Chilliwack, the District of Mission, the District of Kent, the District of Hope and the Villiage of Harrison Hot Springs and the eight electoral areas of the Fraser Valley Regional District. A commissioner and staff person from the Cultus Lake Park Board are also appointed as observers, as are representatives from the Lower Mainland Treaty Advisory Committee (LMTAC).

Each jurisdiction represented on the FVTAC may appoint two political appointees, with voting rights, two alternates and a non-voting staff appointee. These appointments are for one-year periods.
