About the FVRD

The Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) is a division of British Columbia’s local government. We are an important part of the lives of the people who live within our boundaries. Our role is to provide good government, services, stewardship, and economic and environmental well-being for the communities we encompass.

The FVRD Regional Growth Strategy outlines our plans for carrying out these responsibilities.

What is a regional district?

Ever wonder what exactly a regional district is and does? The B.C. provincial government has created a great web page that explains the history of regional districts and how they operate in B.C. today. It’s an interesting and easy-to-understand overview.

Check it out: A Primer on Regional Districts in British Columbia

Location and Boundaries
The Fraser Valley Regional District is located in the eastern Fraser Valley of British Columbia, Canada. The district lies approximately 100 kilometres east of Vancouver. The boundaries of the FVRD include eight electoral areas and six member municipalities.

To learn more about the geographic location of the FVRD and its communities, please see In Our Region.

Government
The FVRD is governed by the B.C. Local Government Act and is an integrated part of the municipal system of government in British Columbia. We have a board of directors that oversees our planning, strategies, and policies. Some of these directors are elected by the rural citizens of the electoral districts of the FVRD and provide direct local government representation. The rest of the directors on the board are comprised of representatives elected in member municipalities.

To learn more about the FVRD’s governance, please see Board of Directors and Committees and Commissions.

Services
Our services are diverse and vary depending on the size and needs of the area we are servicing. In areas that are part of a municipal government, the FVRD works in conjunction with that municipality to help provide services. For areas that are not covered by a municipality, the FVRD provides services and elected local government representation.

For more information about services the FVRD provides to its citizens, see Services.

History
In December 1995, the Fraser Valley Regional District was amalgamated from three former regions: Central Fraser Valley Regional District, Dewdney Alouette Regional District, and Fraser Cheam Regional District.
