The FVRD is located in a confined airshed that is susceptible to the build up of contaminants that have a negative impact on human health, visibility and the environment.  Under the direction of the FVRD Board’s Environment Committee, the Planning Department oversees an air quality program designed to reduce emissions and improve local air quality.  A new Air Quality Management Plan will be completed in 2010.  For more information about local air quality issues, click on the "Air Quality Matters" link to the right.

Information gathered from the region’s air quality monitoring stations is used to identify air quality issues and generate options for future air quality policy and management strategies.  The FVRD works collaboratively with Metro Vancouver on monitoring the Fraser Valley’s air quality.  Currently, air quality is regulated by the Ministry of Environment, but the Fraser Valley Regional District is working towards acquiring regulatory authority over its airshed and the ability to implement Metro Vancouver air quality standards.
